Individual Therapy for People Care Too Much

Say goodbye to people pleasing, and hello, to your preferences, your voice, your Self.

What is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy offers something that you may not have had much of in life: a space to reflect, connect with yourself, and to feel truly heard. It’s particularly supportive for neurodivergent adults who may have felt that putting others first, and masking to hide the pain of not being allowed to matter, was the best way to stay safe, in a unpredictable world.

Therapy is not about learning to "fit in" or "manage" your differences. It is about understanding how your brain works, discovering what supports your wellbeing, and creating a kinder internal world.

Come as you are. We’ll figure the rest out together.

Why People Come to Therapy

People come to therapy for many reasons. You might be:

  • Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or burnt out
  • Struggling with anger and a sense of injustice
  • Masking fatigue, or sensory overload
  • Exploring your identity following an autism or ADHD diagnosis
  • Struggling to know what you want and how to say this
  • Feeling like you’re always ‘too much’ or ‘not ‘
  • Struggling to establish boundaries in your relationships
  • Intensely focussed on the wellbeing of others, whilst self care, feels indulgent

You don’t need to have a clear reason to come to therapy. The space is yours, however you need it.

You don’t need to wait for a crisis to ask for support.

About me

My name is Karen, and following a late diagnosis, I identify as neurodivergent, more specifically AuDHD. In practice, this means that I am good at thinking outside the box, and also at focusing on its contents!

I understand that it can be difficult acknowledging that you need to speak with a counsellor, after all, you may never have sought help before, let alone from a stranger. If you are neurodivergent, you may also be carrying the baggage of a lifetime of misunderstandings, about you and by you.

What can you expect from me?

You can expect me to see your worth, and treat you with respect.

You can expect me to be engaged and fully committed to our therapeutic relationship, working at your pace on the things that concern you.

You can expect ethical practice. I have regular supervision and also seek advice from the BACP when necessary. If I feel that I cannot meet your needs, I will say so, within the limits of my position, and do my best to help you to find another therapist.

My approach

My approach is warm and personalised. I am trained in Transactional Analysis, Imago Relationship Therapy, and EMDR, and draw on each approach as needed.

Together, we will:

clarify your goals for therapy

identify and process what has kept you stuck

build your resilience so that you feel able to respond differently

work towards changes that matter to you

If you are looking for a therapist who is well trained, experienced, and good at what they do, feel free to get in touch.

You can book a session by sending an email.

Payment

All bookings remain provisional until you have paid.

Once we have agreed, the date and time of our FIRST session, I will hold that space for 24 hours to give you time to pay.

For subsequent sessions, I ask that you pay, 2 days before each session, via bank transfer.

Non-payment, for a first session, will be taken as a cancellation. For subsequent sessions, the cancellation policy applies.

Fee Increases

I experience increases in the associated costs of being a therapist, i.e. insurance, supervision, advertising etc. and this may be reflected in an increase in my fees, which I review annually.

How often will we meet?

We can meet on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

As the quality of our therapeutic relationship plays a significant part in the work that we will do together, I recommend that we meet on a weekly basis for between 6 to 12 weeks, in the first instance, and take it from there.

How many sessions must I have?

I've had clients who found that a single session was enough to kick start the growth that they desired. More commonly, I have clients who prefer to work on a long term basis. Essentially, our work together will be tailored to your needs, and you'll have as many sessions as you need to achieve your desired outcome.

Short term work with individuals, is usually between 8 and 12 sessions.

Long term work is open-ended, but punctuated by regular reviews.

Counselling and psychotherapy require commitment: to regular attendance, to being open, to processing outside of sessions. However, you are under no obligation to continue in therapy, and when you feel ready to end the contract, I ask that we do this in a planned way, so that we can tie up any loose ends.

Are you a member of any professional organisations?

I am an accredited member of the BACP - British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (membership no. 00919098).
